Background

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of the ticket request correspondence for the inaugural, four-part lecture series "The Prospect of Western Civilization" delivered by Arnold Joseph Toynbee, Director of Studies in the Royal Institute of International Affairs, in April 1948.

Biographical / Historical:

The Bampton Lectures in America at Columbia were established by the bequest of Ada Bampton Tremaine. Her ancestor, the Reverend John Bampton, established the Bampton Lectures at Oxford University. She provided in her will that the lectures be given annually and that the subject be of theologic, scientific, art or hygiene. Starting in 1948 the Bampton Lectures were open to the public and free of charge. The collected lectures were published by Columbia University Press.
