Scope and Content:

Sketches, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, tearsheets, photographs and printed material. The collection includes more than 900 drawings and watercolors. The material covers much of Charles Saxon's professional career

Biographical / Historical:

Noted illustrator and cartoonist. Charles David Saxon (1920-1988) graduated with a B.A. from Columbia in 1940. While still in his teens, Saxon joined the staff of Dell Publishing Company as an editor before becoming a pilot in the Army Air Corps. He continued his work at Dell after the war until he joined the staff of "The New Yorker." His drawings were used in advertisements for a number of corporations. His cartoons and illustrations appeared in such magazines as "Architectural Record" "McCall's Magazine" "Sports Illustrated" "Newsweek" "Town and Country" "Woman's Day" and "Gourmet Magazine." His work was collected in three volumes, OH, HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY! (1960), ONE MAN'S FANCY (1970), AND HONESTY IS ONE OF THE BEST POLICIES (1984).
