Background

Scope and Content:

Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, photographs, subject files, and printed materials belonging to artist and collector Nikolai V. Zaretskii (1876-1959). The collection is a mixture of materials created by or for Zaretskii, and materials collected by him. Zaretskii collected materials in the field of 19th and 20th century Russian culture, and his collection includes items by such figures as: Sergei Diagilev, Sergei Esenin, Mikhail Pogodin, Afanasii Shenshin (Fet), Petr Viazemskii, Maksimilian Voloshin, and Andrei Zhukovskii. The collection also includes materials from an album of autograph letters from Russian writers to the literary historian and translator Alexander Eliasberg (1878-1924), presumably acquired by Zaretskii.

There are letters to Zaretskii from Mstislav Dobuzhinskii, Vasilii Kandinskii, Boris Panteleimonov, and Aleksei Remizov, and one letter each from Vladislav Khodasevich and Evgenii Zamiatin. There are also "gramoty" prepared by Remizov for Zaretskii.

The collection also includes Zaretskii's personal and professional correspondence from the 1920s through the 1950s; manuscripts and notes by Zaretskii; his personal documents; materials on exhibits arranged by Zaretskii, on such topics as Aleksandr Pushkin, drawings by Russian writers, and Russian soldiers as authors; and inscribed books by Remizov and Viazemskii.
