Biographical / Historical:

The 9th Beijing Independent Film Festival (also known as BIFF/第九屆北京獨立影像展收藏/第九届北京独立影像展收藏), organized and supported by the Li Xianting Film Fund, took place in Songzhuang, Beijing (北京宋庄) from 2012 August 18th to August 26th. The film festival featured independent films focusing on contemporary subjects and matters which revealed the realities of the society despite the country's economic progress. The film festival aimed to create and support a sustainable space for independent films in China. The festival attracted government attention and was interrupted by a power outage on its opening day. Despite the interruptions, organizers, film makers, and attendees waited and the screening was relocated to the courtyard office to accommodate the screenings. Additional pressure from the government authorities were imposed as the festival proceeded. Organizers were foreced to move the festival to an artist's residence in order to finish the programming towards to the end of the festival. In 2013, governmental pressure limit screenings capacity to no more than two people. In 2014, the authorities completely shut the festival down, confiscated the Film Fund's digital assets, and detained and harassed organizers, film makers, and attendees.
