- Scope and Content:
Over half of the collection consists of records of New Netherlands Coin Company auction sales, including a ledger documenting coin sales (1940-1946) and invoices, bid books, bid sheets, lists of bidders, and annotated catalogs (1943-1974). Also included are alphabetical files of correspondence with company president Charles Wormser regarding topics such as coin appraisals and sales, catalog requests, and other matters. Additional correspondence and other materials relate to a variety of individuals, coin companies, and topics, such as the Henry H. Clifford collection of western money (1974); the estate of William R. Keating and an inventory of his coin and paper money collection (1962); the Floyd T. Starr estate inventory (1972); I. Tatnall Starr II (1971-1972); Kevin Lipton Rare Coins Inc. (1986-1988); B.A. Seaby Ltd. (1976-1986); Jon Hanson (1974-1977); Roy E. (Ted) Naftzger (1973-1975); A.H. Baldwin and Sons (1969-1975); Robert Lloyd (1973-1975); Richard W. Murrie (1976); and a letter from Spink & Son to Charles’ widow, Ivra, regarding the sale of coins (1992). Also includes photograph plates and loose photographs of coins for use in catalogs.
- Biographical / Historical:
Coin dealer Moritz Wormser (1878-1940) formed New Netherlands Coin Company in New York City in 1936. His son Charles (1911-1990), an associate of the company from the time of its founding, ran the firm after his father’s death. In 1950 Charles invited John J. Ford to assist him and he shortly became a full partner running the business. The company closed in 1988.
