Background

Scope and Content:

Letter, 22 August 1931, from Edward T. Newell to Alfred Bellinger, concerning cleaning the tetradrachms and denarii he received from Bellinger: tetradrachms: 15 Seleucid type; 5 Nero; 1 Galba, 1 Titus; denarii:1 Trajan; 2 Marcus Aurelius; 1 Verus; 1 Commodus; and 1 Crispina. A Valerian denarius however, was not cleaned as the obverse was completely illegible. Newell was seeking more information on the discovery of Valerian coin, e.g., the hoard, location, date, accessory circumstances, etc., and also requested a summary of two hoards Bellinger was working on. He states: "I woke up in the middle of night, last night, and roundly cursed the ancient owner for having played such a dirty trick as to pop that confounded Valerian into the bag at the last moment." The letter was previously folded (14 x 8 cm.)
