Abstract:
Alfred Dorn was an American poet, critic, and professor. Born in 1929 in Flushing, New York, Dorn attended New York University for his undergraduate and doctoral degrees, where he studied English Renaissance poetry. He lived and worked in New York City for the remainder of his life, teaching at Queensborough Community College and the City University of New York, participating in many poetry readings and conferences, and serving as a prominent member of many literary organizations including the Poetry Society of America and the World Order of Narrative and Formalist Poets. The Alfred Dorn Collection contains literary manuscripts, professional papers, correspondence, and personal documents and photographs.

Scope and Content:

The Alfred Dorn Collection, 1906-2014, chiefly contains manuscripts, published appearances, submissions to literary journals and contests, and records of poetry readings.

Additionally, there is material related to Dorn's teaching career, involvement in professional organizations, correspondence, photographs, and audiovisual material.

A small file of personal material contains family documents, yearbooks, diplomas, eulogies written by Dorn, tributes for Dorn following his death, and a collection of manuscripts and correspondence from Alfred Dorn's wife, Anita.

Biographical / Historical:

Alfred Dorn (1929-2014) was an American poet, critic, and professor. Born to Frederick and Julia Dorn in Flushing, New York, Alfred Dorn received both his undergraduate and doctorate degrees at New York University, where he studied English Renaissance literature. Remaining in New York City for the rest of his life, Dorn was highly active in the local poetry and literary community of the city. He taught at Queensborough Community College and frequently gave poetry workshops and readings in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and neighborhoods outside of the city. He was often accompanied by his wife, fellow poet Anita Dorn.

During his career he authored seven books, including Flamenco Dancer (1959), Wine in Stone (1959), A Formalist Quartet (1991), Voices from Rooms (1997), From Cells to Mindscapes (1997), Claire and Christmas Village (2003), and Visits and Vistas (2006). His poems have appeared in more than sixty literary journals, and he was actively involved in a number of literary organizations such as the Poetry Society of America and The World Order of Narrative and Formalist Poets. An ardent proponent of traditional verse forms, Dorn was a leading figure associated with the literary movement of New Formalism.

Acquisition information:
The Alfred Dorn Collection, 1906-2014 was donated to the Poetry Collection in three accessions between 2014 and 2017 by Bryen Lorenz, step-son of Alfred Dorn.

Dorn's colleagues Dr. Carolyn Raphael and Dr. Joseph Salemi organized and packed the bulk of collection materials in New York prior to donation. Material was kept in original order as much as possible during processing.
