Background

Scope and Content:

This collection documents the activities of the Kavyayantra Press, a letterpress publisher run by faculty and students at The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, including markups, galleys, broadsides, and correspondence, from 1995 to 2006. Many items also include a sheet prepared by the Kavyayantra Archives with information on date, title, author, type, graphics, printer(s), and collaborators. If items exist in duplicate, five copies have been retained, and the others deaccessioned. The collection includes work by Brenda Coultas, Barbara Guest, and Anselm Hollo.

Biographical / Historical:

The Kavyayantra Press was founded by faculty and students at The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in 1993. Kavyayantra is Sanskrit for "poetry machine," a name chosen in part to acknowledge Naropa University's Buddhist roots. The press acquired its equipment from other presses, including Lyn Hejinian's Tuumba Press. As of 2010, it uses two Chandler and Price platen presses and a Vandercook SP-15 proofing press.
