Various materials on the life and medical career of Dr. Albert Henry Briggs. Dr. Briggs was a prominent member of the medical profession in Wester New York serving as Buffalo's first health officer and Cheif Surgeon of the 65th Regiment of New York Volunteers. The collection includes account books, ledgers, office registers, journals, and other related materials.

Background

Scope and Content:

The Albert H. Briggs collection consists of sixteen volumes of account books, ledgers, office registers and casebooks documenting medical visits, treatments and fees. Casebooks document Brigg's medical care of the 65th Regiment of New York Volunteers at G.A.R. encampments of 1897 and 1898. Also, a medical examiner's record book for Lodge No. 83, A.O.U.W., 1877-1879.

Biographical / Historical:

Albert Henry Briggs was born in Elma, N.Y. in 1842. In 1871 he received a medical degree from the University of Buffalo and became a member of ht Erie County Medical Society. Dr. Briggs gradually rose to prominence in the medical profession of Western New York. He was one of twelve original organizers of the Buffalo Medical Union, and he organized the city health department, becoming Buffalo's first appointed health officer. Beginning in 1880, he served as New York State Medical Examiner of the A.O.U.W., and for over 35 years as Chief Surgeon of the 65th Regiment of the New York Volunteers. During the Spanish-American War, he served under Colonel Samuel M. Welch until he became surgeon of the 4th Division at Camp Alger, Virginia.

The collection was first gifted to the Buffalo Historical Society by Mrs. Briggs in 1972/11/01. The collection was donated to the Robert L. Brown History of Medicine Collection in
