The letters were written between June 1963 and May 1966 while Judith was a student in the University at Buffalo's School of Pharmacy. The content covers a time when the School of Pharmacy was increasing the admission of women and the letters document the local, state, and national events that affected the lives of young people pursuing a college education during the mid-1960s.

Judith Anne Baker Cardoni was born on November 18, 1943, in Binghamton, New York. Judith attended Afton Central School during her elementary and high school years and was valedictorian of her high school class in 1961. Judith attended St. Bonaventure University in Olean, where she matriculated in a self-designed curriculum that would meet entrance requirements for admission to the University at Buffalo's School of Pharmacy. In May 1963, Judith moved to Buffalo, New York, to take a summer course in pharmaceutical analysis to meet requirements for admission to the School of Pharmacy. She was accepted to the program and upon graduation in 1966, she became a licensed pharmacist in New York, first employed as a hospital pharmacist at Sisters Hospital of Buffalo, NY.
