Scope and Content:

This collection contains the family papers and professional materials of Georgia Burnette. The family papers includes materials and photographs of Burnette family reunions. The professional materials include Georgia Burnette's published articles on family reunions, health, travel, and African American veterans.

Series I: Family papers, 1970-2017, contains the materials and photographs from Burnette family reunions. This series also contains family histories as well as the Burnette family newsletter, the Burnette Bugle. Some folders have reunion documents and photographs separated into multiple folders. Series I also includes clippings from Reunions Magazine, with articles written by Georgia Burnette. Newspaper clippings were copied onto acid-free paper, while the original clippings are also preserved between sheets of acid-free paper.

Series II: Professional Work materials, 1955-2018, contains Georgia Burnette's awards, diplomas, commendations, and documentation from her educational and professional accomplishments. The bulk of the series includes magazine and newspaper clippings of articles concerning family reunions, health, travel, Juneteeth celebrations, and African American veterans. Many articles were authored by Georgia Burnette. Newspaper clippings were copied onto acid-free paper, while the original clippings are also preserved between sheets of acid-free paper. Series II also contains materials and photographs from University at Buffalo's School of Nursing class reunions, as well as Georgia Burnette's Cuba travel materials. Of notable importance are the materials concerning the Buffalonians, a club organized by and for African Americans born during the depression era in Buffalo, New York.

Biographical / Historical:

Georgia Burnette (nee Mackie) was born in Buffalo, New York in 1929. She attended the University at Buffalo's School of Nursing in the early 1950s, one of two African American students accepted into the program. She graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She was married to her husband, Luther Burnette, in 1967. To further her education, Burnette obtained a Master's in Education from Niagara University in 1976, and obtained a Master of Science in Nursing from the University at Buffalo in 1981. Professionally, Burnette was the Associate Director of Nursing at Buffalo General Hospital, Assistant Professor of Nursing at Niagara University, and Director of Nursing at both the Roswell Park Cancer Center and the Buffalo Psychiatric Center. Burnette retired professionally in 1993, but continued to be active in the Buffalo African American community. Her community service work includes: The Buffalonians, Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, Child and Family Services, Reach-Out Program, and B.U.I.L.D. (Build Unity, Independence, Liberty and Dignity) of Buffalo. A prolific writer, Burnette authored dozens articles on travel, Juneteenth celebrations, family reunions, health, and African American veterans.

Georgia Burnette is a recipient of the Mary B. Talbert Civic and Cultural Club award for Outstanding Contributions to the Buffalo Community; New York State Department of Health, Outstanding Service Certificate for Work on the Inter-Agency Task Force on Women's Issues, and the Ruth T. McGrorey Award for contributions to the Advancement of Nursing.
