Scope and Content:

The George F. Rand scrapbooks, 1925-1981 consists of two scrapbooks.

The "George F. Rand, 1891-1942" scrapbook is a scrapbook of clippings and other ephemera documenting Rand's death in 1942. This series also includes photographs and a small amount of correspondence. Of note is a letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The second scrapbook contains clippings, correspondence, publications and ephemera that reflect Rand's career in banking and his philanthropic contributions to the Western New York area. Rand's professional leadership with the Marine Trust Corporation, the Marine Midland Corporation and the Buffalo Trust Company are highlighted throughout the scrapbook.

Biographical / Historical:

George Franklin Rand, Jr. was born in North Tonawanda, New York, on December 9, 1891. His father, George F. Rand, Sr., was president of Columbia National Bank and Marine National Bank. George F. Rand, Jr. attended Lafayette High School in Buffalo and earned his B.S. from the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania. Rand was known as one of the foremost bankers and businessmen of the state of New York and the country at the time. Shortly after his father died, Rand was named vice president of the Marine Trust Company. Within ten years Rand had become president of Marine Midland Corporation. During his banking career he was instrumental in building a state-wide banking organization that served numerous communities. Rand was very involved in the Buffalo community. He served on the Board of Directors of Kleinhans Music Hall and the Albright Art Gallery, he was a member of the UB Council, and was a trustee of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Buffalo General Hospital and the Nichols School. George F. Rand, Jr. married Isabel Hadley Williams in 1922 and had three children. He died on November 19, 1942 following a brief illness.
