Background

Scope and Content:

Collection includes music scores and lyrics for the University at Buffalo's fight song, "Here's to Old U. of B.", created in 1912, other music compositions, news clippings, photographs, and materials detailing Dr. Hofschneider's dental and fishing inventions, namely a dental lubricator called the "Oratundra" and the "Red-Eye Wiggler" fishing lure.

Biographical / Historical:

Dr. Frederic J. Hofschneider was born on February 7, 1893, graduated from the University at Buffalo Dental School in 1914, and set up practice in his hometown of Rochester, New York. In 1923 he invented an automatic dental lubricator originally called the Oratundra. He made other improvements on dental techniques and equipment and in 1926 formed the Hofschneider Corporation to manufacture his inventions. Dr. Hofschneider was on the faculty in the Dental Dispensary at the University of Rochester from 1914 to 1930 when he injured his hand. His professional career ended in 1932 when he suffered a stroke.

While attending the University at Buffalo, he composed and orchestrated the college's fight song, "Here's to the Old U. of B.", which he copyrighted in 1913. To pay his tuition he played piano professionally. He was an avid fisherman and patented many fishing lures, the most famous being, the Red-Eye Wiggler. He also invented a pin-ball machine, the Lazy Susan, a beer tap, and a bottle brush.

Dr. Hofschneider married Catherine M. Vetter in 1916. The couple had two sons, one who died in a house fire in 1944, and four daughters. Mrs. Hofschneider took over the management of the corporation when her husband was stricken and built it into a thriving business. Dr. Hofschneider died on September 1, 1950. The company was purchased in 1979 by Scotch Game Call Company of Oakfield, New York.
