Background

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of alphabetical files maintained by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Letters. Files that deal specifically with the Faculty's eleven departments are located in Archives 16/1/903.

Biographical / Historical:

The Faculty of Arts and Letters came into being in 1967 when the University planned a massive academic reorganization. The academic units were divided into seven different faculties, of which Arts and Letters was one. It originally consisted of a number of departments that were in the original College of Arts and Letters including Art, Classics, Drama and Speech, English, Modern Languages and Literatures, and Music. Other departments were added to the faculty later like American Studies, African-American Studies, Comparative Literature, and the Center for Media Study, which later became the Department of Media Study. The Faculty was disbanded in 1998 when the University again reorganized and reestablished the College of Arts and Sciences.

Acquisition information:
The University Archives received a number of separate accessions of records from the Faculty of Arts and Letters (and later the College of Arts and Letters). This collection consists of records received by the Archives in 1987 (accession number 87-028), 1994 (accession number 94-023), 1996 (accession number 96-000), 2001 (accession numbers 01-005 and 01-006), and 2002 (accession numbers 02-002 and 02-003), as well as records from two unnumbered accessions.
Processing information:

Processed by Karen Morse, January 2005.

Arrangement:

Following the original order of the materials, this collection is organized alphabetically (and color-coded for better accessibility). When a folder title deviates significantly from the title on the original folder a note has been made. Commonly used abbreviations are listed when known.
