Biographical / Historical:

Bruce Jackson is the Samuel P. Capen Professor of American Culture and

State University of New York Distinguished Professor of English. Having taught

at UB for nearly forty years, and the author or editor of 22 books, Jackson has

produced documentary films, important folkloric recordings, photographs, and

articles addressing aspects of American culture, including southern work songs,

prison reform, drug culture, and racial politics. In 2002, the government of

France named him Chevalier in L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France's highest

award in the arts and humanities. Jackson is also editor of the web journal, buffaloreport.com.

Donated by Bruce Jackson, in multiple accessions dating January

1968, March 1971 and August 1971.

This collection is arranged in five series: I. The Negro and His Folklore in Nineteenth Century Periodicals,1967, II. A Thief's Primer,1969, III. Articles, 1964-1968, undated, IV. Wake up dead man: hard labor and Southern blues,1971, and V. A thief's primer,1969. This collection is organized by date of accession. Folder titles

remain original, however many are missing dates. Folders in Box 5 are not

titled, titles described in this finding aid for Box 5 derive from a

transmittal list, prepared by Jackson (1971).
