Background

Scope and Content:

Two scrapbooks of speeches, 1905-07 (incomplete), with a few items up to 1920. Norton was Vice Chancellor of the University of Buffalo from 1905-1909, and Chancellor from 1909-1920. The main topic of the speeches, correspondence, and clippings in this collection is the "University Extension" movement of which he was the chief spokesperson during this period.

Also includes a speech on "The College Idea," circa 1909-1910, and a photocopy of a letter from Norton to Stanford University President David Starr Jordon, February 8, 1910, about the development of the University of Buffalo.

Biographical / Historical:

A lawyer who graduated from Harvard, Charles P. Norton helped found the Buffalo Law School in 1887 which was assumed into the University of Buffalo in 1891. During his tenure as Chancellor (1905-1920) the College of Arts and Sciences was established and 178 acres were acquired from Erie County and private owners for a campus for the university. Walter P. Cooke served as acting chancellor 1920-1922.

Acquisition information:
Transferred to University Archives in November 1969. Transcript of an undated speech was gifted by Paul Bert in October 1970; photocopy of letter from Norton to David Starr Jordan received from Stanford University Archives in May 1969.
