Background

Scope and Content:

This collection contains survey sheets, data sheets, and some photos from the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier’s surveys of the Allentown area in 1970, and the New York State Division for Historic Preservation in 1974. A list of streets surveyed is included in the box and folder list.

Biographical / Historical:

The Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier began in 1970, when Gerry Notman, Mary J Broquedia, Tony Fryer, and architects Bill Shelgern and Fred Houston banded together to stop the demolition of Coit house on Virginia Street near Elmwood Avenue. The effort grew when Rosie Esty, Ginny Tillou, Peter Clement, and Bill Magavern joined the group to form the founding members of the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier. The Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier continued to work to preserve Buffalo history by stopping demolition of historical buildings and pushing for landmark status. In 2008, LSNF merged with the Preservation Coalition of Erie County to form Preservation Buffalo Niagara. New York State unofficially established its parks department under a Temporary State Park Commission to decide whether to form a public park in the Adirondack Mountains, which was denied. Over time, the department evolved to include conservation and historic sites, including the NYS Division for Historic Preservation. The department eventually became the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in 1981. The NYS Division for Historic Preservation’s Allentown Survey was a continuation of earlier Allentown survey begun on the local level, and was resumed under direction of the department to form part of evaluations by state and federal departments of transportation in planning an arterial highway through the area.
