This collection contains the papers on Anne J. Russ, varying from her preliminary Ph D. dissertation papers and various research projects, to information and notes from her administrative work at Wells on various committees.

Biographical / Historical:

Born in 1938, Anne J. Russ earned her B.S. in Education from SUNY Cortland in 1959, her M.A. in Latin American History from southern Methodist University in 1968, and her Ph D. from Cornell in U.S. Women’s Education and Administration in Higher Education in 1980. She began teaching at Wells in 1982 as a professor of Sociology and eventually became Emeritus of Sociology and Education. She received numerous awards, including the first Excellence in Academic Advising Award in 1993. She wrote her doctoral dissertation on Wells, called Higher Education for Women: Intent, Reality, and Outcomes, Wells College, 1868-1913. Russ was a very active member in the Wells community, serving on varying committees throughout her time at the college. While still and employee of Wells, Russ passed away of cancer on March 5th of 2001.
