Some concern land owned in central and western New York which they had purchased from Revolutionary War veterans.

Scope and Content:

These papers consist of receipts, notes, bills, maps, and letters of the Lush family, some concerning lot ownership and transfer, property ownership, and mortgages.The contents of this collection are arraigned chronologically in two sets of dates in the first five folders. The sixth folder contains miscellaneous unsorted material, and the seventh contains the estate of Gilbert Wilson 1860-61.

Biographical / Historical:

Stephen Lush (1753-1825), born in New York City, 1753, graduated at King’s (Columbia) College, admitted to the Bar of the Province of New York, 1774. At the outbreak of the Revolution he became a Captain in Col. Oliver Spencer’s Continental Regiment. Later Stephen Lush was military secretary and aide-de-camp to New York Governor George Clinton. Lush was captured by the British at the fall of Fort Montgomery in October, 1777, exchanged in November and became Brigade Major in 1778 and continued to serve as Clinton’s aide until the close of the Revolution when he settled in Albany as a lawyer. He married Lydia Stringer, the daughter of Dr. Samuel Stringer, prominent Albany physician. Lush was a member of the New York State Legislature, Director of the Bank of Albany, the Albany-Schenectady Turnpike Company, the Albany Water Works and the Albany Insurance Company. Richard Lush (?-1817), presumed to be a brother of Stephen, was born ? and died in Albany in 1817. He married Lyntje Fonda, daughter of Gysbert Fonda, Albany merchant in 1780. Richard Lush was a successful merchant, land speculator and public servant. He held the offices of Assistant Alderman, Surrogate Judge of Albany County and County Clerk of Albany County. He was a prominent member of the Albany Ineffable Lodge, F. and A.M.
