Background

Scope and Content:

These materials primarily consist of scanned readings and book excerpts pertaining to the history of the Colt, Foot(e), and Booth families, scans of original documents, and research notes and correspondence from Lucretia Booth Evans and Susan Bonynge Strange.

Biographical / Historical:

This collection comprises research notes from Susan B. Strange and Lucretia Booth Evans in researching the extended genealogical history of three branches of their extended family: the Colts, the Foots, and the Booths. In 1803, Ebenzer Foot(e), whose ancestor was Nathaniel Foote, who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the early 1630s, married Elizabeth (Betsy) Colt, whose ancestor John Colt came to Connecticut in 1636 with the Rev. Thomas Hooker. They had a daughter, Lucretia Foot(e), who was born in 1804, and was the subject of a painting by an unidentified artist that is now part of the Albany Institute’s collections. In 1814, Ebenezer Foote helped found the Albany Academy for Girls, one of the first schools in the nation dedicated to girls’ education. He died that same year. Lucretia Foot(e) later married Lebbeus Booth, a banker who helped establish the Ballston Spa National Bank.

These research notes and materials represent a tracing of these various familial connections through multiple generations. The collection primarily consists of scanned copies of written works, genealogical histories, primary documents, and handwritten and typed research notes and correspondence.
