Biographical / Historical:

The Coeymans Patent and the Ten Eyck family are documented in this collection of legal, financial and land records. The following persons are prominent in this collection: Jacob Ten Eyck, the son of Coenradt and Geertje (Van Schaick). Ten Eyck was born in Albany, NY, April 21, 1705 and died in Albany, September 9, 1783. He was prominent citizen of the city and served as Mayor, 1748-1750, as a Commissioner of Indian Affairs, 1752-1754, a member of the Committee of Safety, 1775 and a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Land being, perhaps the most frequent means of amassing wealth and status, he and his family were involved in many land sales during the 18th and early 19th century. Other members of the family that are prominent in this collection include: Tobias Ten Eyck, Anthony Ten Eyck, Coenradt Ten Eyck, John Ten Eyck, Andrew Ten Eyck and Moica Ten Eyck. Tobias Ten Eyck, the son of Coenradt and Geertje (Van Schaick) Ten Eyck was born 1723 and died 1791 of an exploding gun he had made as a gunsmith. He was married to Judithje Van Buren. The Coeymans Patent was originally patented to Barent Pieterse Coeymans by Gov. Lovelace in 1673, but since the same lands had been part of the Rensselaerwyck Manor there were conflicting titles to the land which was finally settled in 1706. Most of the Town of Coeymans lands that involved the Ten Eyck family were near the village of Coeymans and Coeymans Creek.
