Collection Details

Processed by Gabrielle Carlo, 2012.

Gift of Irene (Montz) Phillips, 2012.

Hilda Schieder's Drum Corps was established in June 1938 as successor to the Martha Washington Drum Corps. The minutes of the meeting on May 2 1938 state the name of the organization as the Martha Washington Drum Corps with the president being Mrs. Von Volkenburg and the drum major Hilda Schieder. The minutes of the next meeting on June 27 1938 state that the president has changed to Hilda Schieder and that the Martha Washington Drum Corps has been disbanded. A vote was taken at that meeting on the name of the new organization and it became known as Hilda Schieder's Drum Corps. The name is stated in variant forms elsewhere in the minutes and constitution, including Hilda Schieder Drum Corps and Hilda Schieder's Fife & Drum Corps. However, it is clearly named Hilda Schieder's Drum Corps under Section 1 of the By-laws and identified as such on the logos on the drum heads in the photographs.

Not much biographical information has been discovered about Hilda Schieder. The Telephone list in the collection shows her living at 144 Wohlers Avenue, Buffalo, New York. There is a reference to her being the director of the Martha Washington Drum Corps in the August 19 1935 issue of the Lockport New York Union Sun and Journal newspaper. According to a Buffalo Courier Express article (Monday, March 14, 1966) Hilda Schieder was struck by a car and killed while crossing Kenmore Avenue at Hobmoor Avenue March 13, 1966. She was reportedly about 60 years of age and living in Williamsville at the time of the accident. She was born Hildegard Kraus, daughter of Frank and Anna Kraus.

The records of Hilda Schieder's Drum Corps include meeting minutes, its constitution and bylaws, business correspondence, and three black and white photographs.

The collection is arranged in four series:
I. Organization documents
II. Correspondence
III. Meeting minutes
IV. Photographs

No further accruals are expected to this collection.
