Biographical History

Adele Gerhard was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1868 where she spent her childhood and adolescent years. She married Stephan Gerhard in 1889 and moved to Berlin, where her involvement in social work brought her in contact with some of the outstanding women figures of her day, Susan B. Anthony, Beatrice Webb and others.

After the birth of her children (Melitta in 1891 and Dietrich in 1896), Adele turned her hand to creative writing. Her first short story was published in 1894 and her full-length work, Mutterschaft und geistige Arbeit, was published in 1901. Her works reflect the times in which she lived, the social movements of the 1890s, womens rights, the youth movement in Germany, and the changes brought about by war and its aftermath. Adele Gerhard followed her children to America in 1938 at the age of 60 after having briefly visited in 1937. She lived most of the time with her daughter, Melitta, became an American citizen, and continued to write in her native German. She returned to Germany in 1955 and died in her native city of Cologne one year later on May 10, 1956.
